Partnership is our bond
35 years ago the World Association of Nuclear Operators was created. All Russian nuclear power plants, including Smolensk, almost immediately joined it, beginning to actively use world experience to improve safety. In honor of the anniversary, WANO Moscow Centre First Deputy Director Anatoly Kirichenko, who has long been firmly associated with this international partnership union, answered our questions.

International guarantor

– Anatoly, how did the Association begin? – I would be happy to talk about the topic of WANO, there are several anniversary circumstances for this. Nuclear industry turned 70 years old – in 1954, the world’s first nuclear power plant, Obninsk, was launched. The 35th anniversary was celebrated by the World Association of Nuclear Operators and the Russian Nuclear Society. And 25 years ago, WANO and the IAEA signed a memorandum of understanding covering issues of cooperation and information exchange. Another circumstance is the special attitude towards the Smolensk station. For me personally, it is somehow warm, dear in a special way...
