WANO MC Directors’ Conference

WANO MC Directors’ Conference
On June 19, 2024, the annual WANO MC Directors’ Conference, dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Association, was held in the Volynskoye Congress Park. The conference was an important milestone in summing up the results of previous years and planning for the medium term. This important occasion brought together nuclear industry managers and leading experts; in total, about forty-five participants took part in the event.

The conference began with a historical overview of WANO and WANO MC by Eduard Martirosyan, WANO MC Governing Board Chairman, and Vasily Aksenov, WANO MC Director, as well as a video message to participants from Naoki Chigusa, WANO Executive Director. These presentations set the tone for sessions on various aspects of nuclear industry development and its performance improvement.

The first session, moderated by Sergey Vybornov, WANO MC Deputy Director, was dedicated to WANO's “Action for Excellence” (AfE) strategy. It began with a report on the AfE implementation at Rosenergoatom. First Deputy Director General for Plant Operation Valery Bessonov highlighted the key achievements and prospects of this project.

During the session, several reports were also presented on the AfE practical implementation at various nuclear power plants, such as Rostov, Smolensk, Leningrad, Kursk, Armenian and Kudankulam NPP. Speakers from the nuclear power plants shared the unique experience and achievements of their plant, which caused a lively discussion among the participants.

The second session, moderated by Dmitry Chichikin, WANO MC New Builds Leader, was devoted to the topic “New countries and organizations, new technologies.” Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director General and Head of Nuclear Energy Department, IAEA, made a report on developing nuclear infrastructure in new entrant countries. Projects for the construction of generation 3+ nuclear power plants and successful examples, such as the Paks II project, were observed. Particular attention was paid to the development of Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant. Vadim Lemekhov, General Designer of the PRORYV project, presented a report on generation IV nuclear energy systems.

The participants continued their work in the third session, moderated by Anatoly Kirichenko, WANO MC First Deputy Director. The session was dedicated to new forms of work with WANO and WANO MC. Possible new forms of work were discussed based on the experience of “mature” nuclear power plants, such as Novovoronezh, as well as “young” nuclear power plants, such as Belarusian NPP. Rosatom Technical Academy spoke about the directions and opportunities for development of the international organization, and "Science and Innovations" presented a report on the Center for Analytical Research and Developments.
