Member Support Mission to Paks II
From 13 to 17 May 2024, WANO Moscow Centre (WANO MC) conducted a NUA mission at the Paks II NPP site, Hungary, on the topic “Automatic control functions or operator support devices in efficiency tracking mode”.
The support mission was conducted in accordance with the WANO MC support plan in the implementation of the Paks II NPP project.
The mission was attended by experts from Russian, Eastern and Western European companies with practical experience in building operator support systems, implementing automatic operating algorithms in the European power grid according to ENTSO-E standards in aFFR and load-following condition.
As noted by the expert team leader, WANO MC New Builds Leader, Dmitry Chichikin, the importance of the mission topic is due to modern requirements for the reliability and efficiency of nuclear power units in power grids with high shares of intermittent (renewable) generation and insufficient compensatory readiness from the side of traditional energy. In this regard, modern power units of generation 3+, built according to Russian designs, must fully meet these requirements without compromising safety and efficiency.
A special role in this process is played by the reliability of technological processes in conjunction with monitoring and control systems and proven automation algorithms, along with the qualifications of operating personnel. All these issues were discussed in detail during the support mission.
The expert team was also given the opportunity to visit the construction site of the Paks II NPP power units and get acquainted with the process of unique work on preparing soils for the start of laying the first concrete, which is scheduled for December this year.
At the end of the mission, the expert team presented a package of recommendations to be taken into account in the implementation of the Paks II NPP project.

The Paks II NPP project is being implemented by the Rosatom State Corporation on the basis of the Russian-Hungarian intergovernmental agreement dated January 14, 2014. In December 2014, an EPC contract was signed for the construction of two new nuclear power units with VVER-1200 reactors. On August 30, 2022, the project received a license for the construction of both power units.
Paks II. Ltd. has been a member of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) since 2017 and is affiliated with the Moscow Regional Centre.
Paks II is the second nuclear power plant in Hungary, being built in addition to the currently operating 4 VVER-440 power units of Paks NPP (future power units 5 and 6).
