Starting from the startup moment almost 60 years ago, and to this day, Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant, according to its director Vladimir Povarov, has been the object of constant work to improve it, scientific research and practical application of the safest approaches to operation.
From December 6 to 8, 2023, International Scientific Technical Conference (ISTC-2023), dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the birth of Three Times Hero of Socialist Labor, Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, USSR atomic project chief scientific director Igor Kurchatov was conducted in the city of Novovoronezh. The event was organized with the support of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC and WANO Moscow Centre. From the WANO Moscow Centre side the following took part in ISTC-2023:
- Kirichenko A., First WANO MC Deputy Director;
- Tarykin V., Head of WANO MC On-site Representatives;
- Soldatov A., WANO MC Adviser;
- Bezruchko O., WANO MC On-site Representative at Novovoronezh NPP;
- Parakhina L., Expert of the WANO MC On-site Representatives’ group.
ISTC-2023 brought together 138 experts from research institutes, specialized universities and nuclear industry enterprises. Over the course of three days, they shared experience, advanced developments and practices in operating power units with pressurized water reactors.
WANO MC First Deputy Director Anatoly Kirichenko made a welcoming speech at the grand opening and a report at the Plenary meeting of the ISTC. He, in particular, noted: “At Novovoronezh NPP, more than anywhere and more than ever, everything related to development and innovation is relevant - this is not an opinion, but a fact. The best technologies are presented here for the first time, the best projects are implemented, and the best specialists work here. It is here that the complete history of nuclear energy development in Russia is clearly presented. Exchange the best, find the best, be the best - the goal of holding an international conference.”
The work of the conference participants was organized within five thematic sections:
• Nuclear safety, operation and fuel handling;
• Thermal-mechanical equipment operation and water chemistry maintenance. Quality questions;
• Electrical equipment operation and instrumentation and control;
• Radiation safety, radioactive waste management;
• Digitalization in the nuclear industry and control and management systems. Diagnostics and predictive analysis of equipment condition. Intelligent operator support system. Process control system.
The WANO MC team participated in all five sections within the framework of ISTC-2023.
In the section “Nuclear Safety, Operation and Fuel Handling” A. Soldatov made a report on the topic: “Features of multiple recycling of MOX fuel in PWR reactors.”
During the conference, special attention was paid to the young generation of nuclear scientists, who will continue scientific research and its practical implementation in the 21st century. Young people were given the opportunity to participate in the format of poster presentations, communicate with colleagues from related divisions of the Rosatom State Corporation, and gain knowledge from leading Russian and foreign scientists and nuclear industry specialists.
In addition, for the first time within the framework of the conference and for the first time at Novovoronezh NPP, the final of the 4th open industry competition for the best scientific and technical report was held. Among specialists, 14 finalists from 9 divisions of Rosatom took part in it, among students - 10 finalists from 7 universities of Russia. The jury included Vadim Tarykin, Head of WANO MC On-site representatives and Alexey Soldatov, WANO MC Industry Learning and Development Program Adviser.
Based on the results of the conference, a collection containing 77 reports was published. This collection was received by all conference participants; it will also be distributed in the scientific community, specialized universities, and at nuclear industry enterprises and will serve as a good theoretical basis for future generations of nuclear professionals.
The results obtained during ISTC-2023 will serve to further develop the nuclear industry, improve its safety and competitiveness in the global market.
