Follow-Up Peer Review of Loviisa NPP

During 13 to 17 March 2017, WANO Moscow Center performed a Follow-Up Peer Review of Loviisa NPP with the purpose of status review and assessment of areas for improvement identified during the operating Peer Review in March 2015.

The team consisted of 6 experts representing four countries – Hungary, Russia, Slovak Republic and Ukraine. The Team Leader was Joseph Beijz (Hungary, Paks NPP), the head of Quality Management Department, he reviewed the ‘Organizational efficiency’ area.

The other experts performed their review in the following areas:
• Maxim Dyrovaty (Ukraine), WANO-MC advisor – Maintenance and Fire Protection areas;
• Andrey Prohodtsev (Russia), WANO-MC advisor – Engineering Support and Equipment Reliability areas;
• Andrey Podoprigora (Ukraine), WANO-MC advisor – Emergency Preparedness and Training areas;
• Roman Boikovsky (Slovak Republic), WANO-MC site representative at Mochovce NPP –Operational Focus, Performance Improvement and Operating Experience areas;
• Gennady Otchenashev (Russia), WANO-MC advisor, Peer Review Coordinator – Chemistry, Radiation Protection and Radiation Safety areas.

Elizabeth Vainonen, WANO-MC site representative at Loviisa NPP provided support to the team in communications and preliminary report preparation.

During the review, assessment was performed of implementation and efficiency of corrective actions developed by Loviisa NPP as a result of Peer Review performed in 2015. The experts noted that the plant had performed a significant scope of work for performance improvement in different plant areas.

On 17 March, during the exit meeting of the expert team with Loviisa NPP managers and counterparts, the Plant Manager Mrs. Satu Katajala highly appreciated the work of experts and expressed confidence that the identified gaps will help the plant to better focus on their elimination. According to the Plant Manager, the plant had to work hard to make good preparations for the Follow-Up Corporate Peer Review scheduled for the next year. Satu Katajala thanked the experts and plant counterparts for their joint work aimed at further enhancement of Loviisa NPP safety and reliability.

The Team Leader Joseph Beijz made a presentation on the Follow-Up Peer Review results, and expressed the opinion that that plant should pay a special attention at the area of Organizational Efficiency. He handed over the preliminary review report to the Plant Manager, and thanked the plant staff for their constructive approach, openness and good working conditions.
